My Diary

The cat slept on the side of the bed my husband left

Dear Delyara, My husband moved out two months ago. Our cat, Mabel, has started sleeping on his side of the bed. She never did that when he lived here because he moved too much and complained about fur. Now she circles the empty pillow twice and curls exactly where his shoulder used to be. I resent her for it. That is ridiculous, but grief after divorce is full of humiliating resentments. She gets the warm space without remembering the argument that emptied it. Tonight, I woke and reached across in my sleep, expecting skin. My hand landed on fur. Mabel opened one eye and purred. I cried so suddenly that she stood up and left. The empty pillow remained warm from her body. My husband and I chose Mabel together at a rescue center. He wanted the orange kitten; I wanted the nervous gray one hiding behind a box. We chose mine. When he left, he said she was more attached to me and should stay. Everyone keeps telling me at least I have the cat. They mean comfort. Sometimes Mabel is comfort. Sometimes she is a small animal continuing routines that remind me our marriage ended while the rest of the household did not receive the memo.
