My Diary

The child was ill and the whole day changed shape

Dear Delyara, The school called just after lunch. By the time I answered, my body had already started reacting like bad news was inevitable. It turned out to be stomach pain, not disaster. Still, within minutes my whole day had rearranged itself around one child lying small and pale on the sofa while I tried to keep work, home, and worry from colliding too hard in the same room. That is one of the harder things about motherhood. How quickly the emotional architecture of a day can be rebuilt without warning. You can start the morning with lists and timings and plans, and by the afternoon none of it matters except whether the child is okay and whether you can still keep the house standing while caring properly. She got better by evening. I didn’t fully come down from the alert until much later.
