The Choice at 50
Dear Delyara, I reached the 'Crossroads' on a Tuesday afternoon in a parking lot. I had a stable job, a pension waiting, and a wife who expected me to keep doing what I had done for thirty years. But I was dying inside. The road ahead was paved and safe, but it led to a version of me that was already a ghost. The other road—the one into the unknown, starting the Sanctuary work I actually believed in—looked like a jagged cliff. My family thought I was having a breakdown. 'You're being selfish,' they said. 'Think of the security.' But I realized that staying for 'security' was the biggest lie of all. What is secure about a heart that is stopping out of boredom? I stood at that crossroads for months, paralyzed. Finally, I realized that if I didn't take the hard path, I would eventually resent the people I was 'staying' for. I chose the cliff. It hasn't been easy, and the money is tight, but when I look in the mirror now, I actually see a man looking back at me, not just a paycheck with a face.
