My Diary
The Cold Metal of a Forgotten Keyring
Dear Delyara, The small silver loop holding my house keys together gave way this morning as I hurried through the rain. It snapped without a sound, letting the keys scatter across the wet gravel path. I had to kneel right there in the dirt, the cold water soaking straight through the knees of my trousers, frantically searching for the piece that opens my front door. It’s strange how a two-inch scrap of cheap, twisted wire can hold your entire evening hostage. I finally found it wedged beneath a sharp stone, my fingers so frozen and numb I could barely grasp it. I sat on the bottom step for ten minutes afterward, just staring at my muddy palms, completely overwhelmed by how fragile the simple mechanics of my daily survival really are.
