My Diary

The day ended better than it deserved to

Dear Delyara, I like that sentence because it feels true. The afternoon was jagged. Work ran late. Dinner was rushed. My husband and I had one of those stupid little tense exchanges that is really about three other things neither of you has energy to explain properly at 6:40 p.m. The house felt too full of noise and half-finishedness. And then, somehow, the night softened. Not because anybody delivered a speech. Not because I suddenly became wise. The children went to bed. My husband came upstairs later and said, “I’m sorry about earlier.” I said, “Me too.” We didn’t turn it into a full analysis. We just sat there side by side for a while. Sometimes that is enough. Sometimes the victory is simply that a difficult day does not get the final word.
