The day the old phone number lost its voice

Dear Delyara, I was cleaning out an old digital contact list today and came across her name and number—the one I used to stare at for hours, my thumb hovering over the dial button, my heart breaking with that old, familiar ache of rejection and pain. For the first time in three years, I didn't feel that sudden, sickening drop in my stomach. I didn't feel the panic or the desperate urge to reach out and plead for closure. I just looked at the letters on the screen, felt a quiet, gentle wave of compassion for the people we used to be, and pressed Delete. My hand didn't shake. The silence that followed wasn't heavy; it was completely clean. I have finally stepped out of the shadow of that wreckage, and my heart is entirely my own again.
