My Diary

The dog kept waiting outside the room where my wife died

Dear Delyara, My wife died at home six weeks ago. Our dog, Finn, was beside the bed when it happened. Since then, he sleeps outside the bedroom door every night. I moved into the spare room because I cannot sleep in our bed, yet Finn refuses to follow me. At ten each evening, he walks down the hallway and lies where her slippers used to be. I have tried treats, his bed, closing the door, even carrying him into my room. He returns. Tonight, I sat on the floor beside him. He placed his head on my leg but kept facing the door. I told him she was not coming back. I actually said the words aloud to a dog because I have not managed to say them properly to myself. Finn sighed and closed his eyes. Maybe animals do not understand death the way we do. Maybe they understand it better and wait anyway. My children keep saying he needs a new routine. So do I. Neither of us appears interested. There is something comforting about sharing a house with another creature who has also noticed one person is missing and does not need me to explain why that changes where we sleep.
