The embryos are stored in a clinic my husband no longer wants to enter
Dear Delyara, My husband and I spent five years creating embryos through IVF. We have three frozen. After our second miscarriage, he said he cannot continue. I understand. I also cannot accept that those embryos may never be transferred. Every year, the storage invoice arrives. We pay it because neither of us can make the next decision. He says keeping them frozen is keeping us frozen. I say discarding them feels like ending possibilities our bodies fought too hard to create. Adoption, donation, disposal, continued storage—every option has paperwork and language that sounds clinical beside what they represent to us. Last night, he said he wants us to stop paying and choose. I began crying before he finished the sentence. He held me and said, “I want my wife back more than I want another baby.” That should have comforted me. Instead, I heard it as if the wife he wants back is waiting on the other side of letting go of the children I still imagine inside three numbered straws.
