My Diary

The first customer after my divorce ordered our anniversary cake

Dear Delyara, I decorate cakes for a living. Today, my first order after returning from divorce leave was the same design my former husband and I ordered for our tenth anniversary: lemon sponge, white buttercream, tiny sugared violets. The customer had no idea. She stood across the counter describing how her husband always buys her violets because they were in her wedding bouquet. I nodded and wrote everything down. In the kitchen, I made the flowers by hand, rolling each petal thinner than paper. My ex used to steal the broken ones while I worked. I kept turning to tell him something, forgetting he no longer lives above the shop. When the cake was finished, it looked better than ours had. Cleaner edges. More delicate flowers. I hated it for that. The customer cried when she collected it and said her husband would love it. I smiled and told her happy anniversary. After closing, I ate one damaged sugar violet alone. It tasted only of sweetness. I had expected bitterness because grief makes you believe even sugar should understand what happened.
