The first Sunday after the divorce papers were signed was strangely gentle
Dear Delyara, I thought I would feel broken, or angry, or empty. Instead I felt quiet. Not joyful, not triumphant, but quiet in a way I had not felt for years. There were no lawyers to call, no messages to reread, no argument hanging in the background, no emotional negotiations left for the day. I made coffee, opened the curtains, and sat in my own kitchen hearing only the birds outside and the kettle cooling. I realized how long I had been living in a state of low-grade anticipation, always bracing for the next difficult conversation or the next practical complication. That morning, for the first time in a very long time, nothing in me was waiting for impact. I don’t think peace always arrives like light. Sometimes it arrives as the absence of noise you had grown too used to. That was my peace.
