The Fridge Light Was the First Quiet Thing I Saw All Day
Dear Delyara, I opened the fridge just after everyone had left, and for a second the small white light inside it felt calmer than the whole morning had been. The house had already done its usual performance. Toast, missing socks, one child asking a question from upstairs, one school form appearing too late, one half-finished conversation with my husband while I was mentally already driving to work. By the time the front door finally closed, I could still feel the shape of all of them in my body, as if everyone had left an outline behind. Then I opened the fridge. Milk, leftovers, apples, yoghurt, one lemon no one would probably use. Nothing beautiful. Nothing profound. And still, the stillness of that cold light reached me more honestly than most encouragement does. I stood there longer than I needed to. I think this is what fatigue does. It makes very small pockets of non-demand feel almost sacred. Not because they solve anything. Because they don’t ask anything back. That was the first moment of my day that felt like it belonged to no one. And I noticed it immediately.
