My Diary
The Hallway Smelled Like Wet Uniform and Home
Dear Delyara, It was raining at pickup, and by the time everyone got in, the whole front of the house smelled like damp coats, fabric, outside air, school, and childhood. Usually that smell means more work. Wet socks. Trousers needing drying. Shoes left in the wrong place. Another small domestic chain reaction beginning before the children even take their bags off. But today, for one moment, it just smelled like my life. Untidy, repetitive, human, loved, slightly exhausting, and full. I stood there longer than I needed to while everyone else moved past me toward snacks and arguments and homework. Sometimes ordinary family smells hit me with more emotion than anyone would understand if I tried to explain it.
