My Diary

The house was finally quiet, but my mind had not caught up yet

Dear Delyara, By nine-thirty everyone was where they should be. The dishes were mostly done, the uniforms were hanging up, the dog had gone out, and even the messages on my phone had slowed down. On paper, it was the peaceful part of the evening. Inside me, nothing felt peaceful yet. My body was in the armchair, but the rest of me was still moving through the day. I was replaying a conversation from work, mentally checking tomorrow’s timing, remembering I still hadn’t signed one form, wondering if my son’s cough sounded worse than usual, and feeling guilty for not texting a friend back properly. That’s what I wish more people understood. Quiet in the room does not always mean quiet in the person. Sometimes the house settles much faster than the woman inside it does. I sat with a blanket over my knees and let the thoughts run around for a while until they slowly lost speed. By the time I went upstairs, I felt more present in my own evening. Not fully restored. Just less delayed.
