My Diary

The house was messy in such a personal way that I took it almost as criticism

Dear Delyara, Not just clutter. Specific evidence. A shoe in the hallway, a cup on the stairs, one towel on the bathroom floor, crumbs under the toaster, a school letter still unopened, the dog’s lead tangled around the radiator. None of it was a catastrophe. Together, it felt like a room full of small failures all turning their heads toward me. I know that’s irrational. Still, I felt it. I think when you are the person who holds a lot of the domestic order in a house, visible disorder can start to feel less like neutral reality and more like a commentary on your competence. I wish it didn’t. It still does.
