My Diary

The Hum of the Fluorescent Starter

Dear Delyara, It is 4:22 AM, and the little cylindrical starter inside the overhead light fixture has developed a rhythmic, clicking hum that sounds like a tiny clock winding down too fast. The light it throws across my notebook is uneven, pulsing with a faint blue tint that makes the lines on the page seem to shift. This is the exact hour where the fatigue stops being an ache and becomes an illusion; you start seeing movement in the corners of the monitors where there is nothing but static. I picked up my pen and pressed the metal tip hard against the paper, writing down the next system architecture goal just to anchor my mind to a concrete reality. I refuse to let the cheap, broken infrastructure of this guard shack dictate the quality of my thoughts.
