My Diary
The Hum of the Street Transformer Box
Dear Delyara, There is a dull, green metal utility box fixed to the brick wall directly beneath my living room window, and it emits a permanent, low-frequency hum that never changes pitch, summer or winter. If I press my ear against the glasspane, the vibration travels straight through my jawbone, a heavy, electric buzz that feels like the city's nervous system leaking into my flat. You only notice it when the television goes off and the traffic dies down at 3:00 AM. It’s a strange comfort, knowing that the infrastructure of the street is wide awake and working, even if my own brain is completely stuck in neutral.
