The Kettle Was Loudest in the Five Seconds Nobody Needed Me
Dear Delyara, This morning, the kettle sounded almost dramatic. Not because kettles are dramatic, but because for five whole seconds, while it boiled and nobody was asking me anything, I could hear one clean sound without a single human need inside it. No school question, no work message, no missing sock, no “Mum,” no “Have you seen…?” Just boiling water. I stood there with one hand on the counter and felt that strange tenderness tired people sometimes feel toward ordinary appliances. The kettle was not making me think, decide, soothe, locate, interpret, or emotionally manage anything. It was simply doing what it came to do. The moment ended quickly, of course. The day returned. Still, I noticed how fast my nervous system reached toward that tiny patch of uncomplicated sound like a thirsty thing. It stayed with me longer than the tea did.
