The librarian helped me become a person on paper

Dear Delyara, I was nineteen, homeless, and carrying every document I owned inside a grocery bag when I met Mrs. Alvarez at the public library. I needed an ID to apply for work, but I needed an address to get an ID, and I needed work to afford an address. She did not tell me to try harder. She helped me untangle the circle. She called a youth shelter, printed forms, helped me request a replacement birth certificate, and let me use the library phone for interviews. For six weeks, I met her every Tuesday at the same computer. She never asked what I had done to become homeless. She asked what I wanted to become. Yesterday, five years later, I returned wearing my paramedic uniform. I brought her a copy of my employee badge and said, “You helped put my name back into the world.” She cried. I cried. Then she introduced me to a teenager sitting near the reference desk with a plastic bag of papers. Mrs. Alvarez asked whether I had time to help. I sat down.
