The SilenceLoneliness
The light under the door across the landing
Dear Delyara, I’ve been awake since midnight, sitting in my hallway with my back against my front door. If I look through the peephole, I can see a thin line of yellow light shining under the door of the flat directly across the landing. Someone else over there is awake too. They’ve been awake for hours, just like me. I want so badly to walk across the small concrete corridor, knock on their door, and say: “I don't know your name, but I am so lonely it feels like my chest is collapsing. Can we just sit in the same room until the sun comes up?” But instead, I just sit here in the dark, listening to the lift cable creak in the shaft, watching their light through the tiny glass lens, too afraid to move an inch.
