My Diary

The mechanic found my wedding ring under the driver’s seat

Dear Delyara, I lost my wedding ring seven years ago. My wife and I searched the house, garden, car, everything. I believed I had lost it at work. She teased me about it for years and bought me a simple replacement. She died eighteen months ago. Today, I took my old car to be scrapped. The mechanic removed the driver’s seat because I had asked whether anything personal was trapped underneath. He came out holding a scratched gold ring. Mine. It must have slipped through the seat mechanism all those years ago. I laughed first. Then I sat down on an oil-stained chair and cried in front of three mechanics who had no idea what to do with me. I put it on. It still fits. My replacement ring is on my other hand because I cannot choose between the marriage before the loss and the marriage that continued afterward. My wife would have called this ridiculous and then told everyone the story. I drove home without the car but with two wedding rings. After seven years, something I thought was permanently lost came back after the person I wanted to show it to was already gone. Timing can be cruel without intending anything at all.
