The mechanic repaired my wheelchair van and refused the payment
Dear Delyara, My wheelchair-accessible van broke down while I was driving my son to a medical appointment. The lift jammed halfway, leaving his chair tilted and both of us stranded in freezing weather. A mechanic from a nearby garage came with tools, lowered the lift manually, and brought us inside. The repair required an expensive motor I could not afford. I began calling charities and cancelling future appointments. Two days later, the mechanic phoned and said the van was ready. He had contacted the manufacturer, found a donated part, and completed the labor after hours. When I asked for the bill, he handed me a receipt showing zero. He said his younger sister had used a wheelchair and he remembered how often a broken machine meant an entire family’s life stopped. Today, my son and I returned with a framed photograph of him arriving at the appointment we would otherwise have missed. The mechanic hung it above his desk. Kindness did not feel like rescue from a heroic stranger. It felt like one person understanding that mobility is not a luxury and refusing to profit from our lack of alternatives.
