The Mugs Needed Drying and I Wanted Credit for Existing

Dear Delyara, Not for drying them. For existing underneath the drying. That’s what I felt standing at the sink tonight, tea towel in hand, turning mugs one by one while my mind ran through all the things I had already done today. Work. Forms. Shopping. Emotional management. School things. Dinner. Messages. Laundry. Worry. Softness. Restraint. And still, there I was drying mugs. I think sometimes what I want is not applause for tasks. I want recognition that there is a person inside all this doing, and that the person has an inner life, not just a service role. No one was there to give that. So I dried the mugs and gave the thought to myself instead. Maybe that counts for something. Some days, it has to.
