The neighbour kept feeding my cat while I was in hospital
Dear Delyara, I had a stroke and spent seven weeks in hospital. I live alone and was frantic about my cat, Nelly. My neighbour, a man I had barely spoken to beyond polite greetings, found out through another resident. He collected the spare key from my sister, fed Nelly twice a day, cleaned the litter tray, and sent me one photograph every evening. He never included cheerful messages about recovery. Just Nelly asleep on the sofa, Nelly angry at rain, Nelly staring at the fridge. Those photographs became part of my rehabilitation because they showed a home still waiting for me without demanding anything. When I returned, the neighbour handed back the key and apologized because Nelly had gained half a kilo. I laughed for the first time that day. Kindness sometimes comes from people who are barely part of your life until illness reveals that they have been standing one door away all along.
