The nurse held my hand while they told us the treatment had worked
Dear Delyara, My husband had been through six months of treatment, and by the final appointment I thought I was prepared for any answer. I had rehearsed both futures so many times that I felt emptied out by possibility before we even entered the room. When the consultant said the treatment had worked and the scans showed exactly what they had hoped for, I went completely blank. My husband cried immediately. I did not. I think my body needed a few extra seconds to understand that the sentence was good news and not another complicated version of waiting. During those seconds, the nurse put her hand over mine. She didn’t say anything. She just held it there until I could come back into the room fully. I keep thinking about that touch. The dignity of it. The human accuracy. Not a big speech, not an over-familiar comfort, just one woman recognizing that another woman had been holding her breath for too long. I will remember that for the rest of my life.
