My Diary

The Particular Gray of the Thames Under a Flat February Sky

Dear Delyara, I crossed the bridge on foot today during my lunch break, standing by the stone parapet to look down at the water. The river wasn't brown or blue; it was a heavy, opaque matte gray that perfectly matched the color of the clouds above, making the entire horizon look like a single, seamless sheet of slate. The water looked thick, almost solid, moving with a slow, muscular current that swallowed the reflections of the tugboats completely. There is an immense, unpretentious dignity in that river. It doesn't try to look clean or inviting; it just does the heavy, dirty work of draining the city day after day, completely unconcerned with whether the people on the bridges think it looks beautiful or not.
