The People Who Stayed in the Hard Seasons

Dear Delyara, My gratitude today is for friendships that survived the unglamorous parts of my life. Not the easy years. Not the funny weekends or the celebratory milestones. I mean the seasons when I was quieter, poorer, more anxious, less available, less sparkling to be around. The seasons when I did not have much to offer except honesty and fatigue. Some people drifted. Some people liked the light version of me more than the real one. But a few stayed. They texted again when I disappeared. They understood that silence sometimes meant struggle, not indifference. They let me be messy without making me feel defective. They remembered details I had only said once. They held me in ordinary ways that did not look dramatic enough to become stories, but mattered deeply anyway. I think good friendship is one of the most underrated forms of grace.
