The promotion went to the man I trained

Dear Delyara, I trained Daniel for fourteen months. I taught him the reporting system, introduced him to clients, corrected his presentations, and covered his work when his son was ill. Yesterday, the company promoted him into the role I had been performing unofficially for three years. My manager said Daniel had “strong leadership presence” and that I was invaluable where I was. Invaluable has become the word people use when they want my labor to remain inexpensive and available. Daniel called me his mentor during the team announcement. Everyone applauded. I smiled. Later, he asked whether I could help him prepare his first management meeting. I said yes before anger reached my mouth. At home, my daughter asked why I looked sad, and I told her work had been busy. I am forty-seven. I have watched younger men rise using knowledge I handed them while I remain the reliable woman behind the outcome. I keep wondering whether leaving would be self-respect or whether starting again at this age would prove the company right about my ceiling.
