THE RAMP WAS FINALLY BUILT

Dear Delyara, After my spinal injury, I returned to work using a wheelchair. The building had six steps at the entrance. Management told me to use the loading dock behind the trash containers. They called it “temporary access.” Temporary lasted fourteen months. I appealed formally. I documented every time deliveries blocked the route. I photographed the broken pavement. My union representative attended meetings with me. An occupational therapist wrote that the entrance was unsafe and discriminatory. The company rejected my first request. I appealed again. Today, the new ramp opened at the front entrance. No ceremony. No ribbon. Just concrete, metal rails, and a door that opens automatically. I rolled up beside colleagues instead of entering through garbage and diesel fumes. A manager said, “This should make things easier.” He was wrong. It did not make me easier. It made the building finally acknowledge that I had always belonged at the front.
