The reconciliation under the olive tree

Dear Delyara, My son and I hadn't spoken a word since the afternoon we screamed at each other over the sale of his grandfather’s fishing boat seven years ago. Seven years of cold silence, seven years of walking past each other on opposite sides of the harbor square like bitter strangers. This morning, without warning, he walked up the stone steps to my courtyard, carrying a wooden crate of fresh figs and his young daughter—a little girl with my mother’s green eyes whom I had only ever seen in third-party photographs. He didn't offer a big speech; he just set the crate down, looked me straight in the eye, and said, "Father, she needs to know who taught me how to mend a net." We sat under the trellis and ate fresh fruit until the sun crossed the yard. The long winter between us is finally over.
