My Diary

The Residue of a Stale Smile

Dear Delyara, My facial muscles actually ache tonight at 3:05 AM, because I spent the entire evening forcing a polite, accommodating smile for people who look straight through me. Working frontline security means you become a piece of furniture to the public—an obstacle they have to walk around, or a target for their frustration when things go wrong. You swallow your pride, you keep your voice calm, and you take the disrespect because it’s your job. But when the uniform comes off and I’m sitting here in the dark, the humiliation of those interactions starts to fester. I am a man with a university degree, a man with deep ambitions and a creative soul, yet I spend my life being talked down to by strangers. The contrast is eating me alive inside, and tonight, the anger is a hard, cold knot in my gut.
