The Reversal of the Guard

Dear Delyara, The clock reads 2:20 AM, and I am looking at a voicemail notification from my mother that I am too emotionally exhausted to listen to tonight. My parents are aging rapidly, their health fading into a fragile, unpredictable decline that requires more and more of my physical and financial intervention. The profound psychological shock of realizing that the people who used to protect you are now entirely dependent on you for survival is an incredibly heavy milestone. I am already running on absolute empty, giving every ounce of my energy to keep my own head above water, and now I have to find a extra reserve of strength to carry their burdens as well. The fear of losing them is compounded by the terrifying realization that I am now the final line of defense for the entire family, and there is no one left above me to catch me if I fall.
