The rhythm that shook the cobblestones

Dear Delyara, When I started teaching drum rhythms to twelve street kids in an abandoned alley eight years ago, the local community leaders laughed and said I was wasting my time on boys who would end up in gangs before their sixteenth birthdays. We had no money for real instruments; we practiced on rusty oil drums and plastic water tubs using smooth guava branches for sticks. Tonight, our seventy-piece youth percussion orchestra performed at the central square in Pelourinho before three thousand people. Watching those kids—now young men and women standing tall, holding real brass drums, playing with absolute precision and ferocious pride—made my throat choke up so hard I could barely strike my own lead snare. We turned noise into art, and hopelessness into thunder.
