The Rhythmic Clicking of the Self-Service Till and the Lack of Human Speech
Dear Delyara, I went through the entire evening without speaking a single word aloud to another human being. I walked into the supermarket, picked up a loaf of bread and some milk, and used the self-service machine, watching the red laser line flash against the plastic barcodes. Scan. Click. Please place the item in the bagging area. The mechanical voice was the only thing that addressed me. It’s entirely possible to live like a ghost in this modern world, moving through crowded spaces, buying goods, and navigating streets while remaining completely invisible behind your own face. It isn't necessarily a sad thing—sometimes the silence is a relief—but it is strange. It reminds you how thin the tissue of our social structure really is, and how easily we can slip into the spaces between the words if we don't actively fight to stay connected.
