The rice boiled over while I was helping with homework
Dear Delyara, I heard the hiss from the kitchen before I saw it. By the time I got there, the water had spilled over the edge of the pot and streaked down the hob in that sticky way that instantly turns cooking into cleaning. My son was still at the table waiting for help with maths, my daughter wanted me to look at a drawing, and I could feel my face hardening before I even opened my mouth. Nothing major happened. That was the whole point. Life does not always bruise through tragedy. Sometimes it’s just the accumulation of three ordinary needs arriving in the same minute while your body is already short on patience. The rice wasn’t the problem. The homework wasn’t the problem. The drawing wasn’t the problem. I was just one degree more tired than the evening allowed. I cleaned the hob, fixed the maths answer, admired the drawing, and served dinner. But later, once the children were in bed, I stood in the kitchen and thought about how much motherhood is really the management of timing. Things are only manageable when they do not arrive together. When they do, even rice can feel emotionally expensive.
