The School Jumper Smelled Like Rain and Playground Dust

Dear Delyara, I picked it up from the back seat after pickup and held it for a second before taking it inside. That smell always reaches me. Cold air, damp fabric, school corridors, child-sweat, outside. The whole invisible shape of a day lived away from me but still brought back on a sleeve. I think motherhood at this stage is partly this — receiving evidence of your children’s lives without full access to the lives themselves. The jumper. The lunchbox. The face at pickup. The one sentence that means much more than it says. The silence. The sudden story. The thing they don’t mention. I hung the jumper up and felt proud, sad, and tired all at once. That seems to happen to me more and more now.
