The school pickup line made me feel lonelier than being home alone
Dear Delyara, I was standing there with the other parents, all of us in coats and tired faces, everyone making those little acceptable conversations people make to prove they are coping fine enough. Weather, homework, clubs, who’s got what this week. I answered. I smiled. I did the normal thing. And inside I felt strangely empty. I think that’s one of the loneliest places in adulthood — surrounded by people, speaking in complete sentences, and still feeling like none of it touches the part of you that actually hurts or needs warmth. It’s not that anyone was unkind. It’s that the whole exchange had no room for truth. By the time my child came out, I felt lonelier than I do on nights when the house is fully empty. That stayed with me the whole drive home.
