The school secretary washed my daughter’s uniform
Dear Delyara, During the worst months after leaving my husband, my daughter and I lived in temporary accommodation with unreliable laundry facilities. One morning, she spilled breakfast down her only clean school shirt and began crying because children had already commented on her wearing the same clothes. I brought her to school expecting to explain. The secretary took one look, found a spare PE shirt for the morning, washed her uniform in the staff machine, dried it, and returned it before lunch. She never announced why. My daughter came home wearing her own clean shirt as though nothing had happened. Years later, I told the secretary how much that day mattered. She said, “I only did washing.” Exactly. Sometimes dignity depends on someone treating your crisis as a practical problem rather than a character lesson.
