My Diary

The shower was the first place all day where no one knew where I was

Dear Delyara, I left my phone downstairs. I locked the bathroom door. I got in, and for ten whole minutes no one called my name, no one texted, no one asked if I had seen, remembered, signed, found, ordered, checked, or replied. I think that is why showers can feel almost spiritual when a life is too full. Not because of the water, really. Because it is one of the only socially acceptable places where temporary disappearance is allowed. I stood there much longer after I’d actually washed. Not because I needed more shampoo. Because I needed more not-being-findable.
