The Smell of Machine Oil in the Trunk

Dear Delyara, I opened the boot of my car tonight to check the spare tire, and the sudden, sharp scent of old machine oil and rusted iron from an old toolbox hit my face like a physical blow. Instantly, my throat closed up and my heart began to hammer against my ribs with a frantic, terrifying violence. It’s the exact smell from the warehouse basement where everything went wrong in 2022, a sensory trigger that my nervous system refuses to forget. The event is over, the people are gone, but my body is still entirely trapped in that dark corner, permanently convinced that every shadow is an oncoming strike. I hate that a simple smell can still completely break my dignity.
