My Diary
The Sound of a Heavy Truck Idle on the Distant High Road
Dear Delyara, Far away, past the rows of sleeping streets, a heavy engine is idling on the dual carriageway. It’s a low, rhythmic vibration that travels through the damp ground, vibrating the glass on my desk and making the water in my cup shake in tiny, perfect circles. Thrum. Thrum. Thrum. It sounds like a giant heart beating somewhere deep beneath the asphalt. Listening to it makes me feel like the last person left alive on a planet that has completely forgotten why it’s spinning. Everyone I love is miles away, tucked under blankets, dreaming of completely different worlds, while I am marooned here, keeping time with a machine that doesn't care if I breathe or stop.
