The Stark Blue Light of an Escalator Panel and the Tired Eyes of the Stranger Opposite

Dear Delyara, Descending into the underground at dusk always feels a bit like leaving the earth behind. Tonight, as the mechanical steps carried me down into the deep, the side panels were casting a sharp, clinical blue light over everyone’s faces. I looked up and caught the eye of a man going up on the opposite side. He was wearing a heavy high-vis jacket, his face lined with that deep, gray exhaustion that only comes from a twelve-hour shift on your feet, and his hands were stained with dark grease around the knuckles. We looked at each other for perhaps two seconds as we passed—no smile, no nod, just a mutual, heavy recognition of the weight of the day. Then he was gone, lifted back up into the cold air while I was pulled deeper into the concrete tunnels. I don't know his name or his story, but for those two seconds, our shared fatigue felt like the most honest thing in the entire city.
