The UnknownLoss of Path
The static frequency on an untuned radio
Dear Delyara, I bought an old shortwave radio at a flea market today, hoping the scratchy, mechanical noise would help block out the sound of my neighbor’s television through the thin apartment walls. At 3:00 AM, I tuned it to a completely empty frequency—just a flat, endless hiss of white noise and static coming from somewhere out in the atmosphere. I laid on the floor with my ear right against the speaker, listening to that empty roar. It felt like the truest sound in the world. It sounds exactly like the inside of my own mind when people ask me what I want to do with my life, what my five-year plan is, or why I don't smile more. I have completely lost my coordinates, and I am just drifting in the empty air.
