The stranger held my groceries while I helped my father stand

Dear Delyara, My father has Parkinson’s disease. Outside the supermarket last winter, his legs froze and he could not move properly. I had two shopping bags and was trying to steady him without dropping everything. A young man walking past simply took the bags from my hands and said, “I’ve got these.” He did not grab Dad or make a scene. He waited while I used the movement cues Dad’s physiotherapist taught us. It took several minutes. When Dad could walk again, the man carried our shopping all the way to the car. Dad thanked him and complained that one bag had eggs, so “don’t swing it like that.” The young man laughed. That detail makes me smile whenever I remember it because kindness did not turn Dad into a fragile object. He was still allowed to be an irritable old man worrying about eggs.
