The Sudden, Clean Exhale When the Ghost Finally Let Go of My Collar

Dear Delyara, I was driving back along the main road tonight when an old track played on the stereo—the exact piece of music that used to be completely ruined for me because it was tied to the darkest, most volatile period of my past. I braced myself automatically, waiting for that familiar, choking knot of anxiety to form in my throat. But as the chorus hit, nothing happened. My heart remained perfectly level. My hands stayed loose on the steering wheel. I just listened to the melody, appreciated the instrumentation, and kept driving through the rain. The memory was still there, but the venom was entirely gone. I stood on the other side of the bridge, looking back at the water without drowning in it. My body has finally accepted that the crisis is over, and the peace of that realization is absolutely magnificent.
