My Diary

The tailor found the train ticket in my dead husband’s jacket

Dear Delyara, I took my husband’s favorite jacket to a tailor because I wanted it altered to fit our son. My husband died three years ago. Our son is twenty-seven now and has his father’s shoulders but not his waist. The tailor emptied the pockets before measuring and found an old train ticket folded into quarters. It was dated the day before our wedding thirty-one years ago, from Pune to Mumbai. My husband had taken that train to marry me. I knew the story, of course. What I did not know was that he had kept the ticket all those years. Through job changes, two houses, children, arguments, funerals, weight gained and lost, he had carried proof of one train journey in a pocket I had washed, repaired, and searched dozens of times without ever finding it. My son asked whether I still wanted the jacket altered. I suddenly could not let the scissors touch it. We brought it home unchanged. Tonight, my son is wearing a different coat. My husband’s jacket is back in the wardrobe with the ticket in the same pocket. Perhaps this is foolish. But I spent three years believing I had already found every hidden thing grief could use against me. Then one tailor reached into a pocket and handed me the day my husband was still travelling toward me.
