The teacher kept my son’s breakfast anonymous

Dear Delyara, After my hours were cut, there were weeks when I sent my son to school without enough breakfast. I thought I had hidden it until his teacher called and asked whether I would be comfortable with him joining an “early reading group.” I said yes. Months later, I learned there was no reading group. She opened her classroom thirty minutes early for four children who needed breakfast and called it reading so nobody had to explain poverty to classmates. She kept cereal, toast, and fruit in a cupboard and actually did read with them afterward. My son believed he had been selected because he was good at books. Today, five years later, I am financially stable and he is starting secondary school. I met the teacher to thank her. She seemed surprised I knew. I told her that protecting his dignity had mattered as much as feeding him. She said hungry children should not have to confess before they are allowed cereal. I have repeated that sentence many times since.
