The Toothpaste Lid Was Missing and I Took It Personally

Dear Delyara, A toothpaste tube on the sink, open and slightly crushed in the middle, the cap gone somewhere into the great family graveyard of small objects no one ever remembers losing. A perfectly ordinary domestic scene. And still I stood there feeling irrationally attacked by it. Because the lid was never the point. The point was that I had spent the whole day dealing with things that should have stayed simple and somehow hadn’t. Money. Mood. Time. Noise. Forgotten items. One difficult email. One child’s silence. One adult conversation that left residue in me long after it ended. So yes, by the time I saw the toothpaste, I felt betrayed by plastic. I put the tube upright and walked away before I turned it into more meaning than it deserved. That restraint felt like maturity. Or exhaustion. Sometimes I can no longer tell the difference.
