The unclutched fist in the front hallway

Dear Delyara, I grew up in a house where doors were taken off hinges, plates were smashed against walls, and rage was the native language. I swore I’d never become my father, but when my own five-year-old son spilled a full carton of milk across my clean work laptop tonight, I felt that hot, vicious surge of generational fury rise straight into my throat. My hand balled into a tight fist. But then I looked at his eyes—he wasn't angry, he was terrified, expecting the blow. I took a deep breath, dropped to my knees, unclutched my fist, and opened my arms. I told him, "It's just milk, buddy. Let's clean it up together." He buried his face in my neck. I am so deeply grateful I found the strength to protect my son from my past. A thirty-year chain of terror just broke in my hallway.
