My Diary

The weather turned and I felt my whole mood go with it

Dear Delyara, By four o’clock the light had gone flat and grey, and I could feel it in my bones before I admitted it in words. I was more irritable, more inward, more tempted by all the small forms of emotional hiding — scrolling, sugar, silence, putting things off until tomorrow because the rain somehow made effort feel heavier. I sometimes forget how physical my moods still are until weather reminds me. The strange thing is that nothing terrible happened. It was just a darker sky, a colder kitchen, a wet washing line, and the children coming in with damp sleeves and louder voices than I could easily absorb. The combination was enough. I made soup and put lamps on early. It helped a little.
