My Diary

The wedding photographer captured my mother looking away

Dear Delyara, Our wedding photographs arrived today. In nearly every image, people are smiling, dancing, raising glasses, or leaning into one another. Then I found one photograph taken during the speeches. I am laughing beside my wife, but my mother is in the background looking toward the floor. She did not approve of me marrying a woman, though she attended because my father insisted. Throughout the day, she behaved politely. She wore the dress we chose together, posed for family photographs, and told guests the flowers were beautiful. I had convinced myself that attending meant she had accepted us. In this one unguarded frame, her face contains grief. I have looked at it for an hour. My wife says we should remove the photograph from the album. I cannot. It is the truest picture of the day. I was happy. My mother loved me. My mother wished my happiness had taken another shape. All three truths stood in the same room under the same lights. Tonight, she texted asking whether the photographs were nice. I replied, “They’re beautiful.” That is also true. Beauty has never required everyone in the picture to be at peace.
